DeepLight optical modem

The miniature DeepLight optical modem is designed for reliable data transmission through the water column over short distances of about 10 meters. It gives the user an easy-to-use solution for point-to-point connections at speeds of up to 115,200 bit/s.

Purpose

DeepLight is an in-house design: an optical modem that links two devices directly, point to point, without a hydroacoustic channel. It is intended for short distances — about 10 m — and for a data rate that is high by underwater standards, up to 115,200 bit/s.

Optical versus hydroacoustic modems

Over short distances, an optical link delivers a data rate that the hydroacoustic modems in our range cannot: up to 115,200 bit/s against tens to hundreds of bit/s (for example, 78 bit/s for uWave, 80 bit/s for RedLine and up to 634 bit/s for uWave Max). When you need communication over hundreds or thousands of meters, hydroacoustic modems are the answer: uWave reaches up to 1000 m and RedLine up to 8000 m. If you need not only to transmit data but also to determine the position of an underwater object, our navigation systems RedWave, RWLT and Zima2 USBL are designed for that.
